Delta Sac-side Striped Bass/Sturgeon

October 22nd, 2009

Bill Crooks invited me and my lucky dog, Spike, out for some stripers or sturgeon. We were skunked. We caught no legals, 1 undersized, had 3 hit/no stick and lost no tails. We fished bait for 4 hours, trolled shallow & deep for 2 hours. We fished the end of the incoming, slack and most of the incoming tide. 6.75 hours (7:15-2:00), 22 miles, 7 locations. Launched at Lower Sherman Island. We bait fished shad, sardines, eel & roe. Water 63-64*, semi-clear, some debris on both the incoming & outgoing. Air 62-78*, sky clear, wind 0 mph. A lot of boats on the water, quite a bit of radio chatter about catching some striped bass, one sturgeon down river near Pittsburg & the Middle Grounds. Thanks for the company Bill, another beautiful day on the water.

Delta Sac-side Stripers & Sturgeon

October 15th, 2009

Bill Crooks, my lucky dog, Spike, and I went out for some stripers or sturgeon. We caught 2 legals to 7#, 2 undersized, no hit/no stick and lost no tails. We fished bait for 3 hours, trolled shallow & deep for 3 hours. The catching that was done was off the mouth of Broad Slough in the main Sac & in Broad Slough (first deep troll outside) at the end of the outgoing, slack & start of the incoming. 6.5 hours (7:15-1:45), 24 miles, 8 locations. Launched at Lower Sherman Island. One fish caught on shad, one trolling deep (chartreuse Yo-Zuri). Water 64*, dirty (most of the time, most places), 30-60 minutes of semi-clear to clear, some debris on the outgoing. Air 62-80*, sky clear, wind 0-3 (mainly 0) mph. Some radio chatter about catching sturgeon down river & in Suisun Bay. Thanks for the company Bill, a great day.

Interesting D.F.G. encounter, regulation & interpretation learned today. Bill cleans our fish after we come in while I de-rig the boat. Two Rangers drive up, chat with us ask to see our fish. Bill shows them two bags on nice fillets. They advise us we can’t clean any fish subject to a slot limit until we get home. They do not give us a ticket as they could see by the size of the fillets that the fish were both legals. Here is the F&G Code Section that the two Wardens said we violated: 5508.  It is unlawful to possess on any boat or to bring ashore any fish upon which a size or weight limit is prescribed in such a condition that its size or weight cannot be determined. The commission may adopt regulations, under which fish other than whole fish may be brought ashore, which establish sizes or weights for cleaned or otherwise cut fish equivalent to sizes or weights for whole fish. When Bill said that this did not say we could not clean a fish on shore, they tried to find another section that would say that. They could not find it, but said, “Trust us, that’s the law”!

Fishing with Lauren (and Spike)

June 11th, 2009

Guy 44x 2009. Lauren, Spike 126x. Thursday. My daughter Lauren wanted to spend a day with me. She & I took my lucky dog, Spike, out for Kokanee. We launched at Capell Cove & were fishing at 6:15 a.m. I fished and Lauren observed the full-range of trailering, launching & retrieving, fishing (very little catching) for Kokanee. At then end of the day she was able to do just about everything in the boat required to fish for Kokanee. We trolled off Skiers Cove, Ranch House & Big Island at 1.25-1.5 mph. We caught 2 Kokanee 17+” & 12”, one 15” Rainbow all at 50’ down. The Kokanee were on a watermelon dodger, pink RGT, Kokanee Special scented corn. The Rainbow was on white Sep’s mini micro flashers & green RGT, Kokanee Special scented corn.

We had 1 LDR and 8 hit/no sticks. Krill gel on the dodger & downrigger ball. 13 miles, 5.75 hours (6:15 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.). Water 70.0*-73.5*; air 52-72*; sky high overcast to clear; wind 0-2 (mainly 0) mph. 30+ other boats on the water, little to no radio traffic, very few nets out. A very special day with my daughter. Quite a girl to get up at 3:30 a.m.! Starcraft Trip # 235, Mercury 90 hp 4-2 EFI 91x, miles 2,473 + 8 = 2,481, hours 1,355 + 1 = 1,356, miles/tank 26 + 8 = 36.

4:14 depart Breckenwood
5:37 Capell Cove (1 hr 22 minutes, 64 miles)
6:16 in off Skiers Cove, 70.3*
